7 Things to Do in Falkirk, Scotland (And Where to Stay)

Falkirk doesn’t always get the attention Edinburgh or Glasgow do, but honestly? That’s part of its charm. Sitting right in Scotland’s Central Belt, this historic town punches well above its weight when it comes to things to see and do. I’ve spent enough time here to know it’s worth more than a quick motorway stop. Here are seven experiences you absolutely shouldn’t miss.

1. The Kelpies

Let’s start with the obvious ones—because they’re obvious for a reason. These 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures are genuinely breathtaking, especially at dusk when they’re lit up. They’re free to view from the parkland, but I’d recommend booking the tour that takes you inside (around £7.50). You’ll learn about Andy Scott’s design process and get right up close to the engineering. The visitor centre opens at 9:30am, but golden hour is when you want your camera out.

2. The Falkirk Wheel

This rotating boat lift is the only one of its kind in the world, and watching it in action never gets old. The boat trip (pre-book online, about £15 for adults) takes you up 24 metres and through the tunnel—it’s part engineering marvel, part scenic canal cruise. The café at the visitor centre does a decent coffee if you’re just there to watch from the viewing platform. Go midweek if you can; weekends get properly busy with families.

3. Callendar House and Park

This grand mansion sits in 170 acres of parkland and tells 600 years of Scottish history through its restored rooms. What I love about Callendar House is how hands-on it is—costumed guides in the working Georgian kitchen, interactive displays, and the slightly eerie “below stairs” tour. Entry to the house is free (though donations are appreciated), and the park itself is perfect for a morning walk. The tearoom does an excellent afternoon tea if you fancy making an event of it.

4. The Antonine Wall

History nerds, this one’s for you. Built by the Romans around 142 AD, the Antonine Wall predates Hadrian’s Wall and marked the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire. The best-preserved section near Falkirk is at Watling Lodge, where you can still see the impressive ditch. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, completely free, and rarely crowded. Rough Castles Fort, just outside town, is another atmospheric spot where you can really feel the weight of nearly 2,000 years of history.

5. Rosebank Distillery

Whisky fans, rejoice—Rosebank reopened in 2023 after decades of closure, and the visitor experience is superb. This is Lowland single malt at its finest: light, floral, and triple-distilled. Book the distillery tour in advance (they fill up fast), and you’ll get to taste the spirit at various stages of production. Even if you’re not a massive whisky drinker, the building itself is gorgeous, and the guides genuinely know their stuff.

6. Helix Park Lagoon

Part of the same park that hosts The Kelpies, the lagoon area is brilliant if you’re after something active. You can hire paddleboards or kayaks from the watersports centre between April and September. There’s also a proper network of cycling and walking paths—hire bikes on-site if you don’t have your own. It’s a surprisingly peaceful spot considering how close you are to the M9.

7. Behind the Wall

This charming independent café on Cow Wynd (yes, really) is where locals actually go for coffee. Tucked down a narrow close, it serves proper espresso, home baking, and light lunches in a cosy space that feels miles away from the chain cafés on the High Street. The toasties are excellent, and they’re open until 4pm most days. Cash and card accepted, but it’s small—don’t expect to get a table at Saturday lunchtime without a wait.
