7 Things to Do in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland (And Where to Stay)

Motherwell doesn’t always top the Scottish tourist lists, but that’s precisely why I love it. This North Lanarkshire town has genuine character, brilliant local spots, and none of the crowds you’ll find in Edinburgh or Glasgow. Here’s my honest guide to spending time here — the places I actually take visitors when they come to stay.

1. Delve into Industrial History at Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life

This open-air museum on Heritage Way is absolutely free, which still amazes me. You can descend into a recreated mine (not for the claustrophobic), wander through reconstructed cottages, and ride on historic trams. The café does a proper bacon roll, and the staff genuinely know their stuff. Go on a weekday morning if you want the place largely to yourself. It’s open 10am-5pm most days, but check before Christmas when hours vary.

2. Catch a Match at Fir Park Stadium

Motherwell FC might not be Celtic or Rangers, but the atmosphere at Fir Park is something special — passionate without being intimidating. The Davie Cooper Stand gives you the best view, and ticket prices are refreshingly reasonable compared to Glasgow’s big clubs. Grab a pie from the kiosk; they’re genuinely decent. Match days bring the town centre alive, especially the pubs along Brandon Street beforehand.

3. Escape to Strathclyde Country Park

Just north of town, this massive park wraps around a loch that hosted the 1986 Commonwealth Games rowing events. I’m here at least twice a week — it’s perfect for clearing your head. You can hire kayaks and paddleboards at the watersports centre, or simply walk the perimeter (about 10km if you do the full loop). The M&D’s theme park sits on the eastern edge if you’ve got kids in tow. Early mornings in autumn are magical when the mist sits on the water.

4. Browse Motherwell Heritage Centreh2>

Tucked on High Road in the town centre, this compact heritage centre punches above its weight. The Roman bathhouse remains are the real draw — actual ruins from the Antonine Wall era, displayed in situ beneath glass floors. The local history exhibitions change regularly, and admission is free. The volunteers who run it are fountains of knowledge about old Motherwell. Opens 10am-4pm Tuesday to Saturday.

5. Enjoy Proper Italian at La Vigna

On Merry Street, La Vigna has been serving Motherwell for years, and the pasta is handmade daily. It’s family-run, proper Italian, not the chain restaurant version. The carbonara is textbook, and they do a lunch deal that’s exceptional value. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings — it’s small and locals know how good it is. The tiramisu is mandatory.

6. Walk the Clyde Walkway

The Clyde Walkway runs right through Motherwell, connecting you to miles of riverside paths in both directions. I particularly love the stretch heading towards Dalzell Estate — wooded, peaceful, and you’ll often spot herons fishing. The section toward Strathclyde Park is flatter and better for bikes. You can join it easily from various points in town, and it’s never crowded midweek.

7. Have a Pint at The Brandon Works

This Wetherspoons on Muir Street occupies a gorgeous old building with original features intact. Yes, it’s a chain, but the building itself — a converted iron foundry — is worth seeing, and you can’t argue with £2 coffee and affordable food. The beer garden is surprisingly pleasant in summer. It’s also genuinely central, making it a handy meeting point before exploring town.

After a full day exploring Motherwell, you’ll want somewhere comfortable to crash.
